Paul has been my trainer for over 3 years. I am 73 years old and needed someone who could put up with an “old” woman. My wife has been a member of the YMCA for years and I have visited them occasionally. It wasn't until I met and Jim Miller, (I was referred to him at Prescriptive Fitness), and realized the benefit of working with a highly trained and experienced trainer that I committed to going to the YMCA on a regular basis. We immediately joined as a family and I have been working with Jim for over 2 years. As a doctor, I appreciate the knowledge and professionalism that is shown on a daily basis from Prescriptive Fitness. The program that they provide has continually encouraged me to adhere to my healthcare goals.
As an Olympic Matelote in 1996, I was in amazing condition. After the Olympics I did not continue to train at the same level and gained almost 40 pounds and lost my cardiovascular conditioning. Thanks to Prescriptive Fitness, Jim Miller and I worked together to set goals, and set up a program to continually achieve them over the next 2 years. I am proud to say that I am in the best shape since the Olympics and within 8 pounds of my Olympic weight! (All this without a running/aerobic program.) As a side note, it only took 4 months to drop the weight and regain my cardiovascular condition.
Prescriptive Fitness has provided encouragement and a plan to achieve my health goals. They have been there on a daily/weekly basis and have always had a personal interest for working with me to continue to reach my next goals. I have been a client of Jim Miller's for many years now (at least seven, maybe more) after working out on my own at the Harris Y for several years, and using the services of another group similar to Prescriptive Fitness in Durham before moving to Charlotte. The things I value about Prescriptive Fitness, and Jim in particular, are numerous, and include:
- Their professionalism - over the years I have worked with Jim, he has modified my program to include new training methods learned through continuing education required to maintain certification.
- Their consistency - the firm I worked with in Durham constantly had turnover among their staff. Like the Prescriptive Fitness staff, they all maintained their professional certification, but unlike Prescriptive Fitness, I was constantly reassigned from one trainer to another, and the knowledge of what my goals and objectives was lost. Jim has been a constant, and while I haven't worked with other PF trainers, I know them and know they have been together as a team for a long time.
- Their encouragement - I know for a fact that Jim pushes me much harder than I would push myself, and the differences in my results versus going it alone have been significant.
- Tailoring the program to my needs - I have had some significant health challenges over the last five years. Jim is both aware of those issues and knows how to adjust my program so that I continue to achieve my objectives without risking injuries associated with the problems I have had.
- The power of positive thinking - Jim is a delight to be around, as are the other PF team members I have met.
The members of the PF staff are great ambassadors for the Y, and I constantly see them cheerfully helping Y members who are not their clients. I know this improves the experience of the Y members they have helped in this way.

I have been a client of Pam's for several years and see her twice weekly. Pam has been instrumental in improving my physical fitness and keeping me motivated to continue with my exercise program. In addition, as a licensed dietician, Pam has provided ongoing advice about diet and exercise not just for me but for both my children who have benefited greatly over the years. I have been a member of the Y for more than 5 years, and while I live just one mile from the Siskey Y, I’ve made the Harris Y my home gym because of Jim Miller and the Prescriptive Fitness team. I’ve been an athlete all my life, competing in Division I field hockey in college, playing in a volleyball league for ten years after college, running a marathon, etc. A few years ago, I realized that the wear and tear had taken a toll on my body and while I worked out on my own, I really needed professional help to maintain my fitness and rehabilitate my injuries. After checking into various options, I learned about the Prescriptive Fitness team at the Harris Y and began training with Jim Miller. I’ve worked with Jim for more than three years now (including through 38 weeks of one pregnancy), and as I turn 41 today, I’m in the best shape of my post-college life thanks to him.
Jim, Paul and the Prescriptive Fitness Team are incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and caring, and their work there provides a service that, in my opinion, makes the Harris Y unique and superior to the other Y branches – and keeps me coming back there week after week. When I first started training and working out with Diane Stoner I was very out of shape and quite discouraged. But at the same time I was very excited and looking forward to the progress we were going to make together. Within days I was feeling, and seeing results. Sometimes it just takes someone on the outside to tell you the things you know you should already be doing, and Diane did that for me in a way that was both encouraging and serious. I would love to do another set of sessions with Diane, no matter her location or cost.

I have trained with Marsha Aurelius and Prescriptive Fitness since 1997. I am now 61 and feel strongly that my training time is largely responsible for my good health and fitness today. I have no back ,hip , or knee problems and have been able to go on active vacations that have include biking and hiking in the Canadian Rockies, Tuscany and Provence and the American southwest. My trainer also was a major help to me being able to get back the use of my shoulder and arm after a fracture from a fall while running. I have even gotten my 85 year old father to train with Marsha since his move to Charlotte and have seen how it has improved his functional strength and stamina. Working with Pam and Prescriptive Fitness has been instrumental in my health over the last 5 years. As you know, my rheumatologist has told me that I must exercise a minimum of 3 times a week to supplement the medication for treatment of lupus. Working with you has allowed me to maximize the time spent in a professional training mode and I have never had an injury. It is critical that I have no injuries to complicate the health concern involving connective tissue and joints. I am aware of other individuals who train on their own and have muscle or other type of injuries.
Your advice, direction and motivation has helped me advance in the level at which I can participate. The Prescriptive Fitness program is very convenient for me and I am glad that it is a part of the YMCA in a Christian environment. I have found that the service provided through Prescriptive Fitness is very professional. Having worked with only two different trainers, one for one year and one for 5 years, the quality of service and personal interest in the clients that I have seen is exceptional.
